Why January is Best for Therapy

January is often considered a period in which new beginnings take place. January is a new beginning, full of hope and resolutions. As promising as this is, this optimism can also be a great temptation to resort to temporary solutions.

THE ‘HOLIDAY HANGOVER’ AND THE PROMISE OF NEW BEGINNINGS

The “Holiday Hangover” is the term for the experience that some people go through after the holiday season. The warmth of people, of giving, of celebration easily wears off, leaving people stressed, anxious, and exhausted. The negative aftereffects of all of this make it difficult for people to move into the new year seamlessly. Instead, people experience pressure to become a “new” person for societal reasons, leading to a sense of inadequacy and unfulfilled promises, as well as discrepancies between reality and idealization in everyday life. Therapy is therefore an important resource for people in overcoming the emotional aftereffects of the holiday season.

The “New Year, New You” Myth

The desire for a “new you” in January is great.  New Year’s Day is a time for the motto “New Year, New You.” However significant the meaning and spirit behind this motto may be, there seems to be a remarkable disregard for so many New Year’s resolutions, which end in the second week of February. Research points out that the majority of these resolutions address symptoms, not the causes of our struggles. For example, a person may decide to start exercising more to accomplish this goal without addressing other factors, such as time and motivation. With therapy, the journey delves deeper and helps a client understand their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, leading to meaningful transformation.

Therapy as The Foundation

Rather than seeking an overhaul, therapy serves as a tool to lay a strong foundation for change. It promotes self-acceptance.

Arbor Wellness believes we do not need a “new” version of ourselves in therapy. What we really require is to have a “supported” version of ourselves. Counseling is all about honoring who we are as individuals. As we accept ourselves for who we are and all that we have experienced, as well as what we have yet to experience in life, we can develop as mindful individuals. This is what counseling can do for all of us.

Reasons Why January Is the Best Time for Launching

In fact, there are three excellent reasons why January is a perfect time to begin therapy:

  1. Building a Routine: After the chaos brought about by the holiday season, people might yearn for some semblance of routine in their lives. Engaging in a weekly therapy session might serve as the foundation for a routine that provides people with a sense of grounding in life, making it easier for them to grow as individuals.
  2. Financial and Insurance Resets: January is a standard time for financial and insurance resets. People review their financial situations and insurance coverage at the start of a new year. Preparing for the investment in therapy at the beginning of the year can translate to better access to mental health resources. Financial or insurance plans commonly reset in January. This indicates that financial burdens for individuals in pursuit of mental health help will not be an issue. People can take control of their mental health at the beginning of the year.
  3. Post-Holiday Blues: The post-holiday period can also be a difficult time emotionally. The celebrations can suppress the emotions of loneliness, sadness, and anxiety, but can come into their own when the celebrations are over, and the bills come due. This month can be an opportunity for some individuals to realize their emotions and seek a way out. It would be very therapeutic to seek therapy during this month.

Investing in Your Future Self

January is a time of personal transformation through therapy. The emotional hangover of the holiday season and unrealistic resolutions gone wrong signal that it’s time to pay attention to our mental health. Recognizing that resilience and growth don’t require becoming “new” versions of ourselves, but instead being supported ones, is key. And January shines brightly for all these reasons: routine development, financial restarts, and recognizing the slumps that follow holidays. Arbor Wellness stands out as a beacon of hope and healing, encouraging investment in one’s future self. This January is your season of transformation and a priority for mental well-being as you embark on your journey as a healed individual.
