Medically and formally known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Autism is a developmental
disorder that pertains to challenges with social skills and communication, restricted interests,
and repetitive behaviors. To further define Autism as a spectrum disorder, each individual with
ASD has varying levels of learning and cognitive abilities, challenges, and capabilities. In the
United States, an estimated 1 in 36 children has been identified as suffering from Autism
Spectrum Disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Environmental and genetic factors are among the many possible causes of Autism
development. A child may show early signs of Autism before reaching one year of age, but
obvious symptoms usually appear at the age of 2 or 3 years old.

Below are some of the social communication and interaction inadequacies of a child with ASD:
· Does not respond when being called by name at 9 months old
· Avoiding eye contact
· Lack of facial expressions
· Having only a few or no simple gestures at all at the age of 1
· Does not play simple interactive games
· Lack of interest in people and their surroundings
· Absence of appreciation for their and other person’s emotions
· Not fond of making friends or playing with other children their age
· Verbal and/or non-verbal communication challenges

A child or an individual with ASD may exhibit behavior or interests that are considered atypical
by others. Some restricted interests and repetitive behaviors are the following:
· Echolalia or repeating words or phrases over and over

· Excessive sensitivity to different sensations
· Habitual movements like hands flapping, spinning in circles, and body rocking
· Gets upset even with minor changes
· Arranging or lining up things, specifically toys, in a particular manner

Although Autism is regarded as a chronic disorder — some affected by it necessitate support in
their daily living, while others can live independently. Immediate intervention can bring positive
results later in life for people with ASD.

If you suspect that your child is suffering from ASD, please don’t hesitate to speak with your
healthcare provider. They can perform specialized screenings and evaluations with utmost care
and empathy to diagnose the condition.
