How Social Connections Elevate Mental Health

Social connections are like glue; they hold us together and make life better. They’re the family bonds, friendships, and even mere social exchanges with the people we encounter day in and day out. Strong social connections are super important to our mental health, and help us feel positive both about ourselves and the world.

One major way these relationships help is by making us feel like we belong. There is this sense of belonging and acceptance and being loved. This sense of belonging can save us from feeling lonely or isolated, which can be very hard on our mental health.

Social ties also provide us with people to talk to when we’re sad. Everyone has rough days, and having someone to vent to can be a game changer. Speaking with a friend or family member can help us work through the feelings or to feel supported. Knowing that someone is there to listen can help a problem feel less overwhelming.

Social connections can give us a much-needed confidence surge. When people support us and believe in us, we’re more likely to believe in ourselves. Support from friends and family can provide the encouragement we need to experiment with new ideas and meet challenges. Imagine getting an invitation to speak at your company’s planning meeting, with your colleagues offering words of encouragement because they understand that your stage fright may overwhelm you. Their support will help boost your confidence, allowing you to perform exceptionally well.

Technology in recent years has made it easier than ever to stay in touch, even when we cannot be together in person. Video calls, social media and online games can help us keep up with friends and family who aren’t nearby. But don’t forget that the best online connections work best with a little IRL ticking along their side. Too much time on line can actually make us feel more isolated so it’s important to make time for some face to face interactions as much as we can.

All in all, we need each other for our own sanity. They give us a sense of belonging, help for when times get tough and a confidence boost. By trying to form connections with other people, both online and in person, we can develop strong relationships that allow us to thrive and keep mentally fit.
