Helping Nevada Seniors Find Mental Health Support

When you think of Nevada, a beautiful state with vibrant cities, spectacular nature, and friendly communities comes to mind. As we get older, different things happen to us; some are really great, and some are quite tough. Older people in Nevada who experience these life changes can feel sad or lonely, or lose interest in what they used to enjoy. These should not be viewed “just as getting older”; they might be symptoms of depression, a treatable medical condition that should be at the forefront of our concern and sympathy.

Many people mistakenly believe that being down is just a normal part of getting older. That is not true at all. Indeed, things like retiring, losing loved ones, or having chronic illnesses can be sad and difficult, but ongoing sadness or feeling wiped out is not a normal part of aging. Depression is a serious mood disorder that can severely limit a person’s quality of life; however, the good news is that it is very treatable.

Why Are the Elderly in Nevada More at Risk?

There are numerous reasons for seniors to feel depressed, and several reasons that may particularly affect people living in Nevada.

  • Social isolation and loneliness: While Nevada is home to some of the country’s most exciting cities, it also has many rural areas where senior residents may live alone, far from family and friends. Besides that, even in cities, one could lose a spouse or get physically disabled, and all these could result in one being isolated. Loneliness is the major contributor to depression.
  • Physical health challenges: Old age is usually accompanied by several chronic diseases such as heart conditions, diabetes, arthritis, and pain, which are not only emotionally exhausting to deal with but can also directly cause depressive symptoms.
  • Loss and grief: It is natural to experience the death of one’s spouse, friends, or pets at different times in life, especially when one is old. Though grief is natural, as minor or severe as it can be, it can be prolonged to a state where it can lead to depression.
  • Life transitions: Retirement, relocation, or changes in finances are among the events that can be major stress factors for one’s mental health.
  • Access to care: In particular, most of Nevada’s very rural areas have very limited access to mental health specialists. Besides that, some people may conceal their problems because of the stigma attached to mental illness, which prevents them from getting the help they require.

Identifying the Symptoms: Senior Depression Can Take Many Forms

Even with close observation, one may not be able to identify the symptoms of depression in seniors because they are so different from those of a younger person. Usually, depression symptoms in older people are not very visible, or people attribute them to various other reasons. Depressed elderly people should not simply be said to be “sad”. Here are some symptoms that may be reliable indicators of depression:

  • Feeling sad, anxious, or emotionally numb most of the time: Even though this is what everybody expects to see for a depressed person, it might be so mild that one hardly notices it at all.
  • Giving up interests and pastimes: Their life turns drab and gray because they no longer enjoy the things that used to make them happy.
  • Feelings of tiredness and lack of energy: Constantly exhausted even after sleeping.
  • Problems with concentration, memory loss, and difficulty making decisions: Depression can sometimes be misunderstood as the early stages of dementia.
  • Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much: Either can be a sign of the disorder.
  • Being easily irritated or restless: Getting angry or upset over the least thing.
  • Other notable symptoms include:

Significant changes in eating habits or weight that can go either up or down.Experiencing physical discomfort that does not appear to go away even after receiving treatment, such as headaches, joint pain, or digestive issues that do not appear to have a clear medical cause.

Feeling worthless, hopeless, or guilty.

Suicidal thoughts or thoughts about death. If someone you know or yourself is having thoughts of self-harm, please seek help immediately.

If you or a loved one exhibits these symptoms, you should seek help immediately.

How Arbor Wellness Mental Healthcare Can Help: PMHNPs’ Compassionate Assistance

We at Arbor Wellness are aware of the different challenges that Nevada’s senior citizens may face. Our PMHNPs (Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners) specialize in holistic, individualized care. We work to honor and recognize each individual’s unique experience and history.

What is a PMHNP?

PMHNP stands for Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. These professionals are advanced practice registered nurses who have undergone specialized education and training in mental health care and are certified for diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of mental illness at any age, including prescription of medicines and psychotherapy. They are fully capable of providing comprehensive patient care from the comfort of their own home in Nevada.

How Arbor Wellness Operates

  • Understanding and Empathy: Each PMHNPs makes it a priority to understand each patient, and instills empathy in the process. The staff members understand how hard it may be to talk about these issues. For people in this age group, it may be even more difficult, as they may have been educated not to show or talk about their emotions. Therefore, they do everything possible to create a space where a patient feels comfortable and respected when articulating their issues.
  • Comprehensive Evaluation: Our PMHNPs do not limit their consideration to the mental health symptoms alone. Depression, social circumstances, and all the issues encompassing it, along with physical health, social circumstances, and even the interactions of medications, are also evaluated.
  • Medication Management: If that is the case, they can prescribe and manage medications that effectively reduce depressive symptoms while also considering potential side effects and medication interactions.
  • The use of Psychotherapy: They employ various therapeutic methods to enable you, first of all, to cope with your difficult experiences, then to be able to focus on your needs and thus, gradually, to have a better life.
  • Recommending Lifestyle Changes: They can suggest lifestyle changes that promote mental well-being, including improving sleep, nutrition, and socializing.
  • Coordinating Care: Our PMHNPs can coordinate care with your PCP and other doctors to ensure your health care is truly integrated.
  • Offering Family Support: Having a family member with depression is something that affects the whole family. Our staff can assist families throughout the journey and provide the resources they need to help family members fully support their loved one.

Depression is not something that one has to suffer through alone. If you or anyone you know who is an older person in Nevada is experiencing depression symptoms, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We at Arbor Wellness Mental Healthcare want to give a helping hand, offer you caring support, and be a part of your happiness again.
