There are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques designed to help children manage their thoughts and feelings more effectively. Cognitive restructuring is a technique that helps children identify and change negative thoughts. For instance, if a child thinks, “I am bad at math, and I will never get better,” a therapist can help them recognize that this thought is not true. The child learns to replace it with a more positive thought, such as, “I struggle with math but can improve with practice. ” This shift in thinking can change how a child feels about themselves and their abilities.
Another important tool is the thought journal. A thought journal is a way for children to write down their thoughts and feelings. For example, whenever they feel anxious about speaking in front of the class, they can jot down their thoughts in the journal. This way, they can see patterns in their thinking. Later, they can discuss these thoughts with a therapist or caregiver to understand them better and find solutions.
For children to manage stress, relaxation practices are important. There are simple exercises that can help kids feel calmer, like deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation. When a child feels anxious, taking slow, deep breaths may relieve some of that anxiety. These are techniques that can be applied anytime, anywhere — great for kids to use in their everyday lives.
Another technique in CBT is called role-playing. For role-playing, kids play different scenarios of how to confront a bully or ask for help. This is a good way to help kids feel more in control and ready for real-life encounters. For instance, a child may play at asking a teacher for help; this can lessen fears about answering questions in class.
Finally, play therapy employs games and other creative activities in order to allow children to express themselves. A therapist, for example, may use dolls to prompt a child to talk about how they feel in connection with a painful experience.
CBT for children strategies are helpful tools that teach them the necessary skills to handle their emotions and thoughts. Cognitive restructuring, thought journals, relaxation strategies, role play and play therapy are some of the techniques that can have a tremendous impact on a child. Children who learn these techniques early on in life, can build a helpful vault of resilience and confidence to draw upon when they are older.
