Are there treatments for Schizophrenia?

With the correct care that is personalized to the patient’s symptoms, Schizophrenia—despite being a chronic mental illness—can be managed.

Individualized treatment plans may involve antipsychotic medicines, counseling, supplementary special care, and other therapies.

  • Antipsychotic medicines

Usually, if a person is first diagnosed during a psychotic episode, they are prescribed these kinds of medicines. Narcoleptics and major tranquilizers are other forms of antipsychotic medications.

Antipsychotic medications can cause adverse effects such as blood disorders, weight increase, weight difficulties, sexual and hormonal issues, liver and heart problems and eye abnormalities, to mention a few. Depending on how severe the symptoms are, it may be taken for a short while or for an extended length of time.

  • Counseling

Individuals with schizophrenia can achieve their goals in life and learn coping mechanisms with the support of mental health counseling

  • Supplementary special care

Family participation, therapies, and medicines are all part of this supplementary care.

A patient’s ability to comprehend and accept their illness is greatly aided by family engagement. Fighting an incurable mental illness requires more than just willpower; it also requires knowing that there are people who love and care about you. It can also be an effective means of determining the problems at home that exacerbate the person’s schizophrenia.

For someone diagnosed with schizophrenia, cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT is the first and most important kind of treatment. The patient will learn effective coping mechanisms for stress, sadness, social anxiety, and drug side effects during this talking therapy session.

Creative activities like writing, dance, music, and the arts can also be beneficial to them. When a patient finds it difficult to articulate their feelings, these visual arts might help them do so. They can serve as a window through which therapists or family members can see and comprehend what a patient is going through. When these artistic endeavors are combined with CBT, the patient usually achieves beneficial results.

Dealing with stigma

Stigma and schizophrenia often go hand in hand, impacting not only the person with the diagnosis but also those in their immediate circle. We now understand that everyone can experience this mental illness, regardless of age, gender, or financial status. Stigma around mental illness is pervasive and can seriously affect patients by causing them to postpone treatment or refrain from seeking assistance altogether.

True, there are moments when it seems like the fight is lost, yet the glimmering light of hope and faith may work wonders for our troubled spirit. Give Arbor Wellness a call at 702-830-9588 if you or someone you know is exhibiting symptoms of schizophrenia. Don’t wait to take the first step toward recovery.

“If you are walking on a path thick with brambles and rocks, a path that abruptly twists and turns, it’s easy to get lost, or tired, or discouraged. You might be tempted to give up entirely. But if a kind and patient person comes along and takes your hand, saying, ‘I see you’re having a hard time — here, follow me, I’ll help you find your way,’ the path becomes manageable, the journey less frightening.” – Elyn R.
