Adverse childhood experiences are unfavorable experiences that can happen in childhood, between the ages of 1 and 17 years. Also known as ACEs, this kind of trauma in children may result from experiences involving violence, abuse, and/or growing up in an environment with rampant drug abuse or issues with mental health. Events and situations like these can put the child in a difficult position that may lead to tragic results such as mental problems, persistent health illnesses, and addiction to illegal substances.
Circumstances that can traumatize a child are:
Abuse – this can be mental, physical, or sexual abuse
Violence
Bullying
Neglect
History of drug abuse of a family member
Being in the company of mentally unstable, depressed, or suicidal people
Loss of a loved one
Usually, a traumatic event induces chronic stress or immeasurable stress that can impact a child’s development. Excessive stress—in a child or adult—makes the body release cortisol. This steroid hormone, also known as stress hormone, can have a significant effect on a person, especially on a child, as increased exposure to it can greatly affect a child’s ability to learn. Several conditions may also arise, such as phobia, insomnia, diseases, mood, and eating disorders, to name a few.
In spite of these, ACEs can be treated and prevented. At home, minimize the risk of exposing your child to trauma by avoiding a violent approach in parental discipline. Talk to them using loving and kind words, build happy and meaningful memories as a family, give them the best physical and emotional care, and provide a safe and harmonious growing environment for them.
Do not hesitate to seek the help of professional healthcare providers if the situation calls for it, as ACEs differ from one child to another. Remember, there is always hope at the end of every struggle.
